Sometimes you like something and then get tired of it.
Sometimes you don’t understand the appeal of something (or someone) but then
they slowly grow on you and you come to enjoy them.
Here is a short list of things and people that I have come to
like/have changed my opinion about in the past year (in no particular order).
And don’t worry, I’ll explain myself.
Joseph Gilgun as Rudy on “Misfits”
This was a bit of a loyalty thing, as I absolutely adore
Robert Sheehan and was sad when his character, Nathan, left the show. I
thought, “How could anyone replace him?” But truth be told, Joseph Gilgun is
quite hilarious, even though some may consider him just a replacement Nathan,
he really isn’t trying to be Nathan.
He is a character of his own and a fun one at that.
“Being Human”
I saw the ads for the American remake of this show on Space
recently and I thought it looked ridiculous and weird (this coming from the
girl who loves “Torchwood”, so that is really saying something). But then I saw
a tad here and there of the original UK series with the adorable Russell Tovey
and Aiden Turner (I’m sorry, to the ghost with whom I am unacquainted) and I
thought, “Okay. Maybe you’re not so bad after all.”
“Mad Men”
I was under the impression that this was some sort of “Sex
and the City” for men, kind of thing. Boy was I wrong. I’m not saying I watch
this show now, but I have caught a bit here and there from my sister watching
it and it’s really actually quite good! It’s so sleek and different, I can now
see why people like it so much, and was getting into it a little bit myself the
other day. Oh, and speaking of “Mad Men”…
Jared Harris
From the little I have seen of “Mad Men”, he appears to have
absolutely killed it in the most recent season. I wasn’t sure about him since
his Moriarty in Sherlock Holmes: A Game
of Shadows left me wanting in some respects, but I think that may have just
been a lack of depth in the role in terms of writing. Good on you, Harris, for
changing my mind with just a couple of scenes in a show I don’t even watch regularly!
Jeremy Renner
I will confess that I still haven't seen The Hurt Locker, and I fell asleep during The Town, so I didn’t get what the fuss was about Jeremy Renner.
But then I heard him sing, and I fell in love. Then he was clever and totally
under-used in The Avengers. And
finally I saw him in Mission Impossible:
Ghost Protocol, in those tight pants, being all cute and gung-ho and I couldn’t
help but enjoy his presence. Yes, maybe his forearm veins scare me a little,
but the rest of his arms certainly don’t… Plus, who doesn’t love a pint-sized
hero? Someone has developed a bit of a celebrity crush to add to my list of
10,000 others, and that someone is definitely might be me.
Channing Tatum
Oh Taters, I know you can dance very well, and thus I
enjoyed Step Up back in the day, but
sadly, I always found him to be a bit of a dopey and bland leading-man. But
then 21 Jump Street happened and her
really found his niche as the dumb-but-funny guy. He also showed some depth in Magic Mike, which was way more than I
thought it was going to be. People named him the “Sexiest Man Alive”, and I
don’t know if I agree with that… Hot? Yes. Sexy? That’s a whole other thing
entirely. Charming? Oh yes, definitely. He charmed my socks off with his sweet
affability this year.
Anne Hathaway
It’s not that I disliked Anne Hathaway, it’s just that I was
getting a bit tired of her. She was in so many rom-com roles that weren’t quite
suited to her, and you could just see her trying so hard in Love and Other Drugs, and trying to make
up for James Franco’s decided disinterest in hosting the Academy Awards. When
someone is in too many roles that don’t suit them, you begin to question their
abilities in general, which is what I did. But all that doubt was wiped out of
my mind when I saw her as Catwoman in
The Dark Knight Rises and her slight role in Les Misérables. She was incredible in both. She blew me away. She
is a fantastic singer. She is unbelievable when she has a chance to be.
And so there you have it: another list to go with the countless other "end-of-the-year lists" you will find online right now.
Is there anything or anyone else that grew on your or changed your mind in the past year? Or maybe someone or something you've grown tired of?
I have a couple of that manner, but I just wanted to be positive this time around.
